![]() ![]() He wasn't a nihilist so much as he wanted to believe he was one. Did he really believe that life was crap and his daughter was better off gone, or is that the type of things someone tells themselves to cope with it? In some ways he has circled back to the denial stage of grief by wanting to believe things like this instead of admitting that he misses her and that it will never be okay. He was so deep in his delusions that he even started to say his daughter dying was a good thing, letting her die while still being an innocent child, and freeing himself from the sin of choosing to be a father. He wanted to convince himself that life was all pointless because then it didn't hurt so much to think about his dead daughter and his old life that fell apart. Much of what pessimistic Rust believes about life was true (in my opinion) but that doesn't change the fact that it was still his narrative that allowed him to not crawl into a corner somewhere and have a breakdown. Rust criticized everyone else for having "narratives they tell themselves to get out of bed in the morning" (religion etc), without accepting that he was doing the very same thing. He wanted a life just like everyone else at one point.Īfter his daughter died, his nihilistic mindset came into the picture as his defense mechanism. At one point he cared to get married and have a child, things that modern Rust would say were silly. He didn't always think life was pointless. Rust never really was a hardcore nihilist. I understand why you feel that way, I relate to Rust as well and he was my main interest in this show, and yeah a positive ending may feel like propaganda that being a pessimist or whatever is never acceptable in the long run, but I think you may have missed certain aspects of it. It has been an absolutely unforgettable experience, immersing myself in this story. I sobbed right along with both characters tonight. All of you who think believing is for the weak? Turns out, even the darkest of men can be pulled into the light. It's been refreshing to have such a loved television character express so casually views as dark as Rust's, and I think he's become a sort of a hero for me and many others in that respect. I have loved and identified with Rust throughout this season mostly because of his brutally honest sort of nihilistic views on religion and life. Now, another experience has changed him again, and it seems he's back to believing again? Time IS a flat circle.
